I admit, while I have often gotten consoles from multiple companies each generation, I generally favor one, and focus most of my loyalties to it. The sixth and most of the seventh generation of consoles, this focus was on Microsoft.
I would also mention that I have been video gaming pretty much from the beginning. I have played most everything from Pong up until today. With that being the case, I have noticed that typically the underdog system is usually the one that caters to its customer and their wants and needs the most and works to innovate (Achievements and then Trophies are a recent and one of the biggest cases of this to me), while the leader just keeps along its usual path.
Getting to the point, and tying all of those things together, I felt the original Xbox, and the 360 for most of its life really seemed to cater more to its fans. Unfortunately, as the 360 gained more and more success, I really felt that Microsoft started turning its back on both the consumer and the development community in general. I had a number of cases that in the interest of time I won't really get into, where I got more and more disenchanted with Microsoft in the last few main years with the 360. While it wasn't the only cause, with the announcements and policies I saw Microsoft take with the Xbox One, I felt it was the straw that broke the camels back, and really felt they told real loyalist such as myself to screw you. Microsoft has since switched up on many of those things following the consumer backlash, but to me, the damage had already been done. I decided to shift my focus back to PlayStation, which I have still been a fan of over the years. Now it seems Sony has decided to really focus on the consumer more in a bit of role reversal with MS. I also do not trust Microsoft at this point, and while they changed a lot of the things I was not pleased with, I still feel they might do an about face and go back to those original things if they feel they can get away with it.
To that end, while I will still play my 360 and games if the situation/game dictates, I have decided that I generally do not feel good playing the 360 anymore. While it might seem trivial and extreme, I liken the feeling as to having to date a significant other after knowing they cheated on you several times. With that being the case, I felt if the monetary loss was small enough if at all, I would work to sell my unopened 360 games and go and replace them with the PS3 versions.
Again, this sounds silly I admit, but I cannot help the way I have been feeling about Microsoft. I will never say never when it comes to gaming with them and the Xbox One, but I am in no hurry to go back to them. I got a PS4 on preorder and canceled my Xbox One preorder before it came out after a long bit of debate. Maybe with time, I will go back, though it will likely be in a small way, similar to how I played the PS2 and 3 a little while MS consoles a lot previously. I do feel competition is good, and there is likely to be some exclusives such as Gears of War and Forza I will want to play at some point. If that does occur, I will probably let the exclusives pile up and drop in price along with the console before I make the decision to let things slide.
Anyway, the checklist below I created really only for me to keep track of the games I have sold and/or got replacements for. I am only putting it on the "Games" page for me to have quick access to it should the need arise... Generally, if it is green, I got a PS3 equivalent, though digital PSN/PS+ copies may not be represented below. Red means I sold 360 version, and still need to replace it. There are a couple of games that I had both versions before I went on this mission, but I listed them below anyway to cover my bases. Also in some cases, it wasn't worth the effort to sell the 360 version if it had low returns, so I just kept it, and still got the PS3 version to play anyway if it was cheap also. Ones with check boxes and marked sold are no longer in my collection.
****Update 04/2014 Microsoft recently appointed Phil Spencer to the head
of Xbox. I have to admit, I really like that news, and really feel he is
the kind of guy that may bring things back to what they were. I will
remain cautious and will keep watch for a while still, but I can't deny there is
some renewed optimism/hope.****
